FAQ

Q. Where is my nearest club ?
A. We have many venues throughout Shropshire, Wales and the Midlands with more clubs opening regularly. Please contact us and we will advise you of the most convenient venue for your needs.

Q. How many nights a week would I need to train ?
A. Twice a week is optimum for a beginner, although some students are unable to give this level of commitment. One night a week is adequate but you may find it takes longer for you to progress through the belts following the syllabus.

Q. Is it expensive?
A. No, or at least not compared to many other extra-curricular activities. Prices
for lessons may vary slightly from club to club, depending on running costs.
You don’t need to buy expensive equipment to start off with. You can start
classes with shorts and Tee-shirts or a track suit. When you decide that you
want to do Ju Jitsu more seriously and to go for gradings, you would need to purchase
a licence an Gi ( suit ). There are many other things you could buy but these are not
needed when you first begin training. All items Gi’s etc can be purchased from the club
or any good martial arts shop.

Q. Do you teach children
A. Yes. We teach children as young a 5. In fact children make up the majority of our
students. I believe this is a similar situation to most other martial arts.

Q. Will my child get hurt ?
A. Jujitsu is a contact sport and some injuries may occur. However there tends to be less instances of injuries in Jujitsu as say rugby. As a parent you can rest assured all our instructors a fully qualified, have an enhanced CRB check and also have some first aid training. All students a fully supervised at all times. As far as “ does it hurt “ go. I would say sometimes. In the controlled supervised environment we provide getting hurt is very rare. You need only to come to junior grading to see the number of children involved. If they were getting hurt they would not keep returning.

Q. Do you provide ladies only classes ?
A. Ladies only classes can be provided, dependent on numbers. Our sister site www.myselfdefence.co.uk can provide ladies classes to suit your needs.

Q. Can you provide 1 to 1 instruction
A. Yes. We can provide 1 to 1 instruction if required. However our sister site www.myselfdefence.co.uk can proved a wider range of options.

Q. How do I grade ?
A. You will follow a structured syllabus, building ultimately towards your black belt. You will train with students of similar ability and no one will be asked to do anything they are not happy with.

Q. What order do the belts come in ?
A. White, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue and White, Blue, Purple, Brown and White, Brown, Black. Grading take place every 3 – 4 months depending on the progress of the individual.

Q. How long until I get my black belt ?
A. It usually takes 3 – 4 years depending on the individual. Remember your jujitsu experience should not be a belt collecting exercise or a race to see who can achieve black belt first. Your journey to black belt will be a very personal thing and you will discover much about yourself along the way.

Q. Will I ever be able to teach ?
A. Of course we are always looking for good committed people to coach. We run a coaching programme which will be introduced to you as you reach the higher grades.

Q. How do I get involved ?
A. Go to our contact us page and get in touch. We will be happy to answer ant questions or queries you may have.
